How to Convert a Shared Mailbox to a User Mailbox

In Microsoft 365, you can convert a shared mailbox to a regular user mailbox through the Exchange Admin Center. This is useful when a shared mailbox needs to become someone's personal inbox.

1Open Exchange Admin Center

Go to admin.microsoft.com > Admin centers > Exchange. Or navigate directly to admin.exchange.microsoft.com.

2Find the Shared Mailbox

Go to Recipients > Mailboxes. Find the shared mailbox in the list. You may need to filter by mailbox type.

3Convert the Mailbox

Click on the shared mailbox. In the properties pane, find "Convert to regular mailbox" and follow the prompts.

4Assign a License

After conversion, the mailbox requires a Microsoft 365 license. Go to Users > Active users and assign a license to the converted mailbox.
